Box 13
"Adventure wanted! Will go anywhere, do anything Write Box 13, c/o Star-Times."
Dan Holiday, played by Alan Ladd, (shown below with Veronica Lake - who isn't in the show -- but isn't she soooo beautiful?) is an author of mystery books. To get ideas for his stories he placed the above ad in The Star-Times newspaper.
The responses brought the usual assortment of crackpots and lonely people. But more often than not brought Holiday more trouble than he bargained for, since he never found out the true details until after he'd met the clients.
He never charged a fee for his help because he was "paid very well for the stories he wrote".
He would generally have to solve a mystery in the process but always returned to his office in plenty of time to enjoy a laugh with his ditzy secretary, Suzy, played strictly for laughs by Sylvia Picker (pictured below.)
He would certainly not meet the strictest requirements for radio detectives or private eyes (not licensed, collected no fees from clients), but the definition should stretch enough to sneak him in under the rope.
Alan Ladd is more famous for his movie roles which include Shane, This Gun for Hire and Wild Harvest (promoted on air during the early episodes of Box 13)
Trivia:
- Alan Ladd is the father-in-law of Cheryl Ladd of Charlie's Angels' fame.
- Alan Ladd was only 5'4" tall. That's shorter than Elijah Wood (who plays Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings) and Jason Alexander (George on Seinfeld)!
There were only 52 episodes made and ALL are available (Yay!!) You can get them ALL at the Internet Archive thanks to our friends at the Old Time Radio Researchers Group --
